Pregnancy: Week 23

This past week I was 23 weeks pregnant. I actually took these pictures with Kat last week, but I've had a lot on my plate and a lot on my mind, which is why it took me a little longer to write it.  I've been reflecting on my blessings throughout the week reading about and talking to my pregnant friends. I am lucky that my baby and I am 100% healthy. Around 50% of my (wanting/expecting/post-delivery) friends are either experiencing severe nausea/morning sickness, having signs and symptoms of preeclampsia, having hemorrhaging intestines, having trouble getting pregnant, or their baby is having a health issue. At this point, I don't have very comforting words to them being fertile and healthy, but I pray that each of these women and their babies are protected and comforted by our gracious Lord. I thank God daily for my current health and many other blessings.

Baby Hurst is moving right along weighing in at 1 pound! I weighed out exactly 1 pound of peaches at the market, which ended up being 5 of them! The baby is more than 11 inches long too! If you can imagine, the baby is long and skinny with very loose peach-fuzz skin ready to be filled in the following weeks with more tissue/muscle/fat. That way the baby will be all squishy and lovable. The blood vessels in the lungs are now developing to prepare for breathing. The baby's cochlea (the inner ear that processes all those sounds waves) is now fully formed making his/her hearing even clearer!

How far along? 23 weeks
Baby weighs the same as: 5 small peaches
Total weight gain: I've been consistently weighing in at 19 pounds gained
Maternity clothes? Yep and loving the comfortable waist band of the pants
Stretch marks? No - I still have an unrealistic hope that I wont get any
Sleep: Just fine... I'm finally getting used to sleeping on my side, and when I'm on my back during the night, Josh is good about rolling me over.
Best moment this week: Getting to spend time at Camp Can Do with kids that need physical, occupational, or speech/language therapy. They were a blessing to me this past week.
Movement: I'm thinking this baby isn't going to be the most laid back little guy/girl. The baby moves all the time, but I feel like we bond so much through the movements. I feel more in tune with our little peanut knowing which positions make him/her more uncomfortable. The baby always squirms when I am sitting and leaning forward.
Food cravings: This week has still been lime ice and then peaches. I can't get enough really. But more than cravings, I have been extra picky, which is not how I eat at all. I'm normally okay with anything under the sun.
Miss Anything? I miss excessive amounts of coffee. MMMMmmmm drinking a cup of bottomless black drip coffee while reading a book for hours on end at a coffee shop sounds amazing. Too bad I can't have that much caffeine or even have that much time to spend at a coffee shop.
Gender: The mystery continues - It is interesting that almost everyone I know is having a girl with the exception of 2 friends (out of 20).
Symptoms: None - just big belly syndrome.
Belly Button in or out? My belly button is still considered in, but not for long.
Wedding rings on or off? On
Mood? I have been a little more irritable than normal - if you figure out why I've been like this other than pregnancy, then let me know because I still don't understand it.
Looking forward to: Making homemade pesto with all of my basil!

Pregnancy: Week 22

I am 22 weeks pregnant this week. This week by week pregnancy is so difficult to keep on track. According to my most recent ultra sound, I hit the 22nd week mark this past Wednesday, because the baby weighed 2 ounces lighter than a 22 weeker. This had me measuring at 1 week and 5 days last Monday, June 10th. I still think my original due date is right, which was October 9th. If that date would have been confirmed, I would be considered 24 weeks yesterday, the 14th. I love the science that has discovered how long it takes a baby to bake before they are ready to come out, but I'd like to know the statistics for how many babies are born on their actual due dates (these statistics aren't so easy to find).

The ultra sound appointment was very interesting and completely different from the first ultra sound. Because we told the tech we didn't want to know the gender, we didn't get to see very much of the lower half of the body. I like seeing the little legs kick and squirm, but I'll see his or her legs soon enough. All of our little peanut's measurements fell slightly below the mean, but they were all still within normal limits. The heart rate was 152 bpm for all of you who like to guess the gender based on this number. (:

This is the baby's face(laying side ways)  and you can see one eye clearly at the top.

This is baby's tiny little foot. We could actually see the toes wiggling.

This one is my favorite. It's his or her little profile.

The baby is the length of a papaya, which is approximately 11 inches long. According to the ultra sound, the baby weighs 14 ounces. His or her tiny tooth buds are being developed under the gums, and the eyelids, lips, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct. The eyes have fully formed, but the iris still lacks pigment.

How far along? 22 weeks
Baby is the length of a: Papaya
Total weight gain: I keep fluctuating from 17-20 pounds.
Maternity clothes? Yes - almost exclusively now
Stretch marks? No
Sleep: I have had deep sleep throughout the week, but I have only gotten 6 1/2 to 7 hours of sleep each night because I don't go to bed early enough! I have to get up around 6am every day, but I don't go to bed until around 11:30pm. Its my fault, but I love staying up late!
Best moment this week: Getting to see my sweet pea again this week through the anatomy scan ultra sound.
Movement: I feel the baby kicking pretty consistently now. The movement is always on my right side down towards my pelvic area. The baby's head was jammed into that area of my pelvis, and the ultra sound tech actually had a hard time getting the baby's head measurements because of his/her placement. She tried to jiggle my belly with the wand to get the baby to move into a different position, and she had me get up and move around. It took a good 10 minutes, but finally we were able to see great measurements of the head's circumference, lateral ventricles, and the quantified weight (I'm still not sure how they came up with that number).
Food cravings: Lime ice has still been prevalent on my craving list throughout the week, but I think Josh would agree this week I have been extra picky in what I'll eat.
Miss Anything? It's the same as last week. I am having that desire to really start getting in shape again, but I have to remind myself that I can't just go out, run, do some ab workouts, and lose weight. The baby needs that extra padding, and the workouts that I'm doing now are maintaining my muscles compared to burning fat.
Gender: We expressed to the ultra sound tech that we are not wanting to find out the gender of the baby, and she did an excellent job concealing him/her. She dimmed the outer edges of the screen whenever she moved the wand closer to the genitals in order to focus on the anatomy she had to screen instead of the baby's gender. I have to admit, it was very tempting to ask her to accidentally scroll over that area, but we did a good job of sticking to our original plan. After the ultrasound, I have an even stronger feeling of the baby being a boy for some reason.
Symptoms: I still have a high gag reflex - potent smells or brushing my teeth can still send me flying to the toilet. I haven't had any nausea or true morning sickness at all.
Belly Button in or out? In or should I say almost level with my belly?
Wedding rings on or off? On
Mood? I have been in a fantastic mood over all. I had one rough day this week, but it was a short lived bad mood.
Looking forward to: I'm looking forward to spending time in the garden this weekend. I do not have any time during the week to even water, but I hope to spend several hours this weekend harvesting, weeding, and watering.

Pregnancy: Week 21

I am 21 weeks pregnant, and I'm starting to feel the beginning of the pregnancy wobble. It takes me a few different tries to get out of bed and a rock back before I actually start walking. I have to share the funniest story that happened this week. A younger girl that goes to our church just understood that I was pregnant even though Josh has told her before. So she said to Josh, "ohhh so that's why I've noticed Elise getting.." as she paused and said in a whisper, "fat." It didn't offend me at all, especially because the comment was so innocent.

Well our baby that is making me so big is already the length of a 10 1/2 inch carrot! If you read last weeks post, you know that the baby has grown 4 inches longer. He or she also weighs 3/4 of a pound. The eyebrows are present now along with those sweet and tiny little eye lids. At this week's ultrasound we should see more of the anatomy, but they will hopefully hide the parts that identify the gender!

How far along? 21 weeks
Baby is the length of a: Carrot
Total weight gain: I was up to 20 pounds, but I've been sick the past two days and have lost 5 pounds. ):
Maternity clothes? Yes, but I'm still loving some of my bigger regular shirts.
Stretch marks? No
Sleep: Average, but I'm still hating that I can't sleep on my back.
Best moment this week: Its between having a double date with some dear friends or going to the Farmer's Market, but either way Josh made it fun both times.
Movement: The movement has been a little more consistent and even distracting at times.
Food cravings: Chicken broth has been high on the list this week.
Miss Anything? I just miss doing some regular exercises like running and ab work outs.
Gender: We still aren't finding out, but we could know this upcoming Monday at our ultrasound. It'll be hard to not look for "signs."
Labor Signs: No
Symptoms: I've just noticed that my body takes longer to heal from exercise or even from being sick.
Belly Button in or out? In, but Josh seems to love how shallow it's getting.
Wedding rings on or off? On
Mood? I would say just happy up until the past two days being sick. Josh took off the entire day today to take care of me, so I am also very thankful this week too.
Looking forward to: Our anatomy ultrasound this upcoming Monday
